Kaizer Chiefs have not tasted silverware in 10 years but the Nedbank Cup gives them a chance to change all of that.
The Glamour Boys were drawn to face Gauteng ABC Motsepe League side, Free Agents FC when the fixtures for the last 32 of the 2025 Nedbank Cup were announced on Thursday evening. On paper, it’s a kind draw for Amakhosi but the team have often failed to beat minnows in this competition.
Chiefs will host their third-tier opponents on the weekend of 25-27 January in what is sure to be an intriguing encounter, pitting one of the giants of African football against the lower league minnows from Eesterus in Pretoria.

Amakhosi goalkeeper, Brandon Petersen says they will not underestimate their opponents.
“Obviously, I am excited, happy with the draw. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who we draw, we are always looking to win our next game,” he was quoted on the club’s website.
The Nedbank Cup has brought bad memories for Kaizer Chiefs in the past. Last year, they were knocked out by Milford FC in what was one of the biggest upsets in the competition
“We cannot dwell on the past,” Petersen insisted.
“We will simply focus on the game at hand. We need to go out and play our won game; do what we do best, and ensure we get the result,” he said.
Kaizer Chiefs last claimed the Nedbank Cup back in 2023 under Stuart Baxter. With Nasreddine Nabi in charge, the club has a reason to believe.
Can Amakhosi claim the Nedbank Cup
Kaizer Chiefs, affectionately known as “Amakhosi,” remain perennial contenders for silverware in South African football. The Nedbank Cup, often described as the country’s version of the FA Cup, presents a prime opportunity for Chiefs to reclaim glory and end their trophy drought. Whether they can claim the coveted title depends on several factors:

1. Current Form and Momentum
Chiefs have shown glimpses of brilliance in recent matches but remain inconsistent. Their ability to string together a winning streak is crucial for a cup run. Momentum from league performances often translates into cup success, so their league form will be a critical factor.
2. Squad Depth and Key Players
A successful cup campaign requires depth and reliable match-winners. Chiefs boast experienced players like Keagan Dolly and Sifiso Hlanti alongside emerging talents. However, injuries and suspensions could test their squad’s resilience.
Key players like Mduduzi Shabalala and Ashley Du Preez will need to perform consistently to carry the team through challenging fixtures.
3. New Coach’s Influence
With Molefi Ntseki recently replaced by Cavin Johnson, Chiefs’ tactical approach has evolved. Johnson’s emphasis on fluid attacking play and defensive solidity is promising, but the team is still adapting to his methods. The cohesion and buy-in from players under his leadership will be decisive.
4. Fixture Challenges
The Nedbank Cup often pits top-tier teams against lower-league opposition, creating potential for giant-killing moments. Chiefs must navigate tricky ties with focus and avoid underestimating lesser-known opponents.
Their ability to handle knockout pressure will also be tested in potential matchups against strong PSL sides like Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, or SuperSport United.
5. History and Motivation
Kaizer Chiefs are the most successful team in South African football history, but their last trophy was the 2014/15 PSL title. The hunger to break their trophy drought could fuel a strong campaign. The team’s passionate fanbase also provides unmatched support, which could prove instrumental in crucial games.
Verdict: Can Chiefs Win It?
Kaizer Chiefs have the potential to lift the Nedbank Cup, but their success will hinge on consistent performances, tactical discipline, and mental toughness. While competition from other PSL giants is fierce, a well-executed cup campaign could see them reclaim silverware and restore their status as champions in South African football.
